This Street Artist Turns Trash Into Wild Animal Sculptures
The work of Portuguese street artist Artur Bordalo is out of this world. For his Big Trash Animal series, the 29-year-old, who goes by the name Bordalo or Bordalo II, reuses old car parts, worn down rubber tires, and discarded plastics, and transforms them into mind-blowing 3D mural portraits of wild animals. To draw special attention to the trash problem plaguing modern society, pollution, and its effect on the planet, Bordalo II only uses materials that he scavenges on the street. Rabbits, toucans, raccoons, rats, owls, and even feathered hummingbirds are all part of his project to raise awareness on the amount of stuff we throw away. His unique technique is a combination of graffiti painting and sculpture with an incredible result that adds an entirely new dimension to urban art.
Bordalo II began his journey in Lisbon, Portugal, where he grew up watching his grandfather, Real Bordalo, covering the city in watercolour. Over the years, Bordalo II discovered his own creative skills and shaped and developed them into the amazing artwork he produces today. At first he only worked in his hometown, but has since branched out to far-away places such as Estonia, the UK, and the US. Bordalo II’s art is not only jaw-droppingly beautiful, but also raises ecological and social awareness in the most creative way possible.
