The World’s First Self-Flying Taxi Has Lifted off in Dubai

Earlier this year, the head of Dubai’s transportation agency announced that self-flying taxis would begin servicing the city by July. Despite Dubai’s reputation for mind-blowing projects, much of the world found it hard to believe that we are not only entering a time with flying taxis, but taxis that would fly themselves.

Much to the surprise of many, the emirate is actually still on track to make that futuristic dream a reality, even if there’s going to be a small delay.

On September 25, 2017, Dubai announced it had successfully conducted a test flight of the Autonomous Air Taxi.

The AAT, designed and built by German company Volocopter, looks much like a regular helicopter, but with 18 propellers instead of one.

It can carry two passengers and currently has a flight time of about 30 minutes – enough to shuttle passengers from place to place in most major cities.

Believe it or not, we are witnesses to the beginning of a new era of flying drone taxis. The future truly is now.
